about

“If I Don’t Take It All” is the second single from Godsticks’ new album “This Is What A Winner Looks Like” and the one that most exemplifies the album’s lyrical themes, which came about as an indirect impact of the pandemic – Darran Charles found himself immersed in TV shows during this trying to find a way an escape from the void of live performance, he explains “This was the very first song I wrote after I got my mojo back in September 2021. Prior to that the lack of gigs during the pandemic era had left me bereft of inspiration and it wasn’t until we started playing live again in September 2021 that I rediscovered my passion for writing. This riff was written the day after our very last show and every song written for the album stemmed from this moment. Lyrically this song was inspired by the TV series Succession which I’ve developed an unhealthy obsession over! The characters are brutal and their quest for power is always intriguing.”

lyrics

Will I get there without pain?
When I get there what’s the game?
Then when I want to crawl away
I forget the rules we made

I don’t mind, just not the face
Careful you don’t fall out the race
While I’m here you’ll need to face
You’ve been put back in your place

If I don’t claim it all
I’ll find a way
I’ll find a way to make it
If I don’t take it all
I’ll return
I’ll make it work

Even though you tell me my mistakes
It don’t matter, some things I can take
Chasing the close is not OK
I don’t need telling I’m awake

How could it go wrong?
I need it, just be strong
I said it all along
How could I be wrong?
